The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that 90 percent of its substations have regained bulk power supply after efforts to recover the national grid, which experienced another collapse on Tuesday.

According to Ndidi Mbah, the Public Affairs General Manager of TCN, the restoration process, following the grid’s sixth collapse this year, is progressing well and nearing completion. Power was successfully restored to Abuja.

The grid failure occurred around 6:18 p.m. on Monday, leaving many areas in darkness. Reports indicated a drop in power generation from 3.87 gigawatts at 5 p.m. to 3.56 GW by 6 p.m., and it fell to zero by 7 and 8 p.m.

Electricity consumers in the Federal Capital Territory expressed frustration over the frequent grid collapses, calling them an embarrassment to the nation. In response, TCN reassured the public that the situation would soon be resolved.

In a statement, TCN explained that the national grid experienced a partial disturbance on Monday, October 14, at approximately 6:48 p.m. Recovery efforts began immediately, with the Azura power station playing a key role in the blackstart. By around 10:24 a.m. the following day, the recovery was at an advanced stage when a minor setback occurred.

Despite this challenge, TCN continued its recovery efforts, ensuring that about 90 percent of substations nationwide had bulk power supply restored.

The statement also noted that supply has been successfully restored to the Abuja area and other key distribution centers across the country. Notably, the Ibom Gas generating station remained unaffected, continuing to supply power to regions in the South-South, including Eket, Ekim, Uyo, and the Itu 132kV transmission substations during the outage.

TCN confirmed that an investigation into the incident’s cause would commence once the grid is fully restored.
