The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has called on Nigeria’s banking sector to strengthen measures aimed at disrupting terrorism financing and other forms of illicit financial flows across the country.
Shaibu made the appeal during a meeting with the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the United Bank for Africa (UBA), Oliver Alawuba, who also serves as Chairman of the Body of Bank CEOs.
According to a statement from the Army Headquarters, the Army Chief stressed that the financial sector plays a critical role in national security, describing banks as key partners in efforts to undermine criminal and terrorist networks.
He urged bank executives to enhance financial surveillance systems, improve intelligence-sharing mechanisms, and ensure the prompt identification and blocking of suspicious transactions linked to terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities.
Shaibu further noted that disrupting the financial lifelines of criminal groups remains a central component of Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategy, adding that effective cooperation between security agencies and financial institutions is essential to achieving lasting security.
The Army Chief emphasized that terrorism and violent crime cannot be effectively tackled by military action alone without cutting off access to funding channels used to sustain such operations. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
