The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has cautioned members of the public about a fabricated video circulating online that falsely depicts senior military officials, including the Chief of Defence Staff.
In a statement, the DHQ confirmed that the video is not authentic and does not represent any official communication from the Armed Forces of Nigeria. The military said preliminary checks indicate that the footage was created using artificial intelligence tools designed to mimic real individuals.
Authorities described the content as a deliberate misinformation attempt aimed at misleading the public and undermining trust in the country’s security institutions.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria noted that the spread of AI-generated “deepfake” content poses a growing threat to national security, as such material can be used to spread false narratives, create confusion, or provoke unnecessary panic.
The DHQ urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and to verify any security-related information through official military communication channels before sharing it on social media or other platforms.
It further warned that individuals involved in producing or circulating deceptive content may face legal consequences, as security agencies intensify efforts to counter digital misinformation. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
