A suspected improvised explosive device (IED) explosion on Monday caused panic at the Shoe Materials Market in the Mushin area of Lagos State, a busy commercial hub known for heavy trading activity.
According to the Lagos State Police Command, the device reportedly detonated under a vehicle shortly after it was started, triggering confusion as traders and customers fled the scene in fear.
Security operatives, including the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, were quickly deployed to the market to secure the area and conduct a thorough sweep for additional threats. Authorities later confirmed that no secondary explosive devices were found.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, said the situation had been brought under control and assured residents that the area was safe following the security operation. He urged the public to remain calm while investigations continue into the cause and origin of the explosive.
One person sustained injuries in the incident and was taken to a medical facility, where he is reported to be in stable condition.
The police have since launched a full investigation into the explosion, as residents and traders gradually resumed normal activities after the area was declared secure. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
