The Senate has criticised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over his call for a United Nations-led investigation into the abduction and rescue of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, describing the request as unnecessary and inconsistent with the principles of statesmanship.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Armed Forces and other security agencies for the successful rescue of the abducted schoolchildren and teachers after 56 days in captivity.
During the debate, Senator Adams Oshiomhole described Governor Makinde’s appeal for an international investigation as “unstatesmanlike,” arguing that it could undermine the efforts of the Federal Government and security agencies in tackling insecurity.
The Senate also paid tribute to security personnel who lost their lives during the rescue operation, observed a minute’s silence in their honour and urged the Federal Government to ensure prompt payment of benefits to their families while strengthening the welfare and operational capacity of security agencies.
Lawmakers further called for sustained military and intelligence operations against terrorists, kidnappers and other criminal groups, while urging security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of other victims still being held across the country.
