Akpabio Commends Nigerian Workers, Reaffirms Commitment to Welfare Reforms on May Day

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has congratulated Nigerian workers on the occasion of International Labour Day 2026, describing them as the backbone of the nation’s economy and the true heroes of Nigeria’s democracy.

In his May Day message, Akpabio praised the resilience, hard work, and patriotism of workers across the country despite prevailing economic challenges, noting that their contributions remain central to national development.

He stated that the 10th National Assembly remains committed to improving workers’ welfare through key reforms, including a living wage, safer working conditions, pension improvements, and expanded job creation initiatives. He also referenced the passage of the new National Minimum Wage Act and ongoing welfare-related policies as evidence of legislative commitment to labour concerns.

The Senate President further urged both public and private sector employers to prioritize the wellbeing of workers, stressing that a motivated workforce is essential for productivity and national prosperity.

He reaffirmed the Senate’s readiness to continue collaborating with labour unions and stakeholders to ensure workers’ interests are reflected in policymaking, pledging that efforts will continue until every Nigerian worker can look to the future with dignity, hope, and confidence.
