The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed reports alleging that Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Khan Salihu was kidnapped before his death, describing the claims as false, misleading and capable of causing unnecessary panic among members of the public.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, the Command clarified that the senior police officer died after a brief illness and was not a victim of abduction or any other criminal activity, contrary to reports circulating on some online platforms and social media channels.

According to the police, DCP Salihu, who served as the Deputy Commissioner in charge of Finance and Administration at the Lagos State Police Command, complained of feeling unwell and was immediately taken to a medical facility for treatment. Despite efforts by healthcare professionals, he was later confirmed dead.

The Command expressed concern over the spread of what it described as unverified and inaccurate information surrounding the circumstances of the officer’s death, noting that such reports caused distress to his family, friends, colleagues and members of the public.

Police spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi, speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, said there was no evidence to support the kidnapping claims and urged media organisations, bloggers and social media users to exercise caution when reporting sensitive issues.

“The report alleging that DCP Khan Salihu was kidnapped is entirely false and without any factual basis,” the statement said. “The late officer passed away after a brief illness. At no point was he abducted or involved in any criminal incident.”

The Command emphasised that misinformation, particularly concerning the death of a senior public official, has the potential to undermine public confidence, fuel unnecessary speculation and inflict additional pain on grieving families.

Police authorities further urged journalists and content creators to adhere to the principles of responsible journalism by verifying information through official channels before publication. The Command warned that the increasing spread of unconfirmed reports on digital platforms poses significant challenges to public trust and effective communication.

DCP Salihu was widely regarded within the police community as a dedicated, disciplined and highly experienced officer.

During his career, he held several strategic positions and was recognised for his commitment to public service and professionalism.

As Deputy Commissioner in charge of Finance and Administration, he played a key role in overseeing administrative operations and ensuring the efficient management of resources within the Lagos State Police Command. Colleagues who worked closely with him described him as a calm and hardworking officer whose leadership and expertise contributed significantly to the smooth running of the Command.

Senior officers and associates have continued to pay tribute to the late police chief, remembering him for his integrity, diligence and years of service to the nation. Many have expressed shock over his passing, noting that his death represents a significant loss to the Force.

The Lagos State Police Command extended its condolences to the family, friends and professional associates of the late officer, assuring them of its support during this difficult period.

The Command also appealed to the public to disregard the kidnapping rumours and rely only on information released through verified and official channels.

As investigations into the source of the false reports continue, the police reiterated their commitment to combating misinformation and ensuring that accurate and timely information is made available to the public.

The death of DCP Khan Salihu has drawn widespread attention across the country, with many Nigerians mourning the loss of a senior officer who devoted a significant part of his life to public service. Authorities have urged citizens to honour his memory by avoiding the spread of unverified information and allowing his family the privacy and respect they deserve during their period of mourning.
