Mourners gathered in Gaza City for the funerals of five Al Jazeera staff members killed in what has been described as a targeted Israeli attack near al-Shifa Hospital. The victims, including prominent correspondent Anas al-Sharif, were honoured by colleagues, family members, and residents who hailed them as voices of truth amid the ongoing war.
The journalists were killed when a tent set up for media workers outside the hospital’s main gate was struck, an incident that has drawn international condemnation and renewed calls for the protection of press workers in conflict zones. Al Jazeera has accused Israel of deliberately targeting its team, rejecting military claims that the reporters were linked to Hamas.
Rights groups say more than 200 journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 2023, describing the deaths as part of a systematic campaign to silence reporting from the enclave. The Committee to Protect Journalists has demanded a full investigation into the killings.
