Former President Goodluck Jonathan has come under renewed scrutiny over what critics describe as his continued indecision amid the lingering crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
An editorial published on Saturday argued that Jonathan’s political posture and silence regarding the deepening divisions within the PDP have continued to fuel uncertainty within the opposition party. The report described the former president’s actions as “constant vacillations,” noting that he has neither openly declared interest in the 2027 presidential race nor distanced himself from calls urging him to contest.
The development comes amid growing agitation from several PDP stakeholders and support groups pushing for Jonathan’s return to active presidential politics. However, the former president has remained publicly silent despite increasing political pressure and speculations surrounding his future plans.
The report further stated that Jonathan has also avoided taking a clear position in the leadership struggle within the PDP, especially between factions loyal to former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and those aligned with other party leaders seeking control of the opposition platform ahead of 2027.
Recently, a faction of the PDP reportedly led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki announced that Jonathan had been granted a waiver and cleared as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2027 election, despite the former president not officially declaring his ambition.
Political observers believe Jonathan’s continued silence may further deepen uncertainty within the PDP as the opposition party battles internal divisions and preparations for the next presidential election.
