World Cup debutants Cape Verde produced a historic defensive masterclass to hold European giants Spain to a 0–0 draw in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group H clash at the Atlanta Stadium on Monday.

Despite Spain dominating possession with 72% of the ball, Luis de la Fuente’s side failed to break through a disciplined Cape Verde defence that stood firm throughout the encounter.

Spain introduced attacking talents Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams in the second half in an attempt to stretch the African side, but Cape Verde remained organised, blocking several efforts and frustrating repeated waves of attacks.

Veteran goalkeeper Josimar José Évora Dias, known as Vozinha, was outstanding between the posts, producing a series of crucial saves to deny Spain, who registered 27 shots with seven on target.

Cape Verde also came close to snatching a dramatic winner in added time from a corner kick, but the header was comfortably saved by Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón, preserving a point for the European side.

The result extends Cape Verde’s impressive record against European opposition, keeping them unbeaten in 13 matches, with their last defeat to a European team coming in 2006.

Pedro Leitão Brito’s side now sit joint-top of Group H with one point and will next face Uruguay before concluding their group stage campaign against Saudi Arabia.
