Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged political leaders and citizens across Nigeria to approach the 2027 electoral season with maturity, tolerance and a strong sense of national responsibility.

Speaking with journalists on Wednesday after observing the Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the Ramat Square Eid Ground in Maiduguri, Borno State, the Vice President warned against divisive rhetoric and actions capable of threatening peace and national stability.

He said governments at both the federal and sub-national levels were taking deliberate measures to cushion the effects of the current economic challenges facing Nigerians.

According to him, the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to reducing economic pressures on citizens through ongoing reforms and targeted interventions.

“Governments at all levels are poised to ameliorate the sufferings of the Nigerian people,” the Vice President stated.

He appealed to Nigerians to remain patient and continue supporting the administration as efforts continue to stabilise the economy, improve national security and expand opportunities for citizens.

The Vice President stressed the need for political actors to avoid inflammatory statements and actions capable of overheating the polity as the country gradually enters another political season.

“As we enter the political phase, there is a need for maturity, forbearance and generosity of spirit in our political interactions. We must avoid inflammatory statements and actions capable of overheating the polity because what binds us together as Nigerians supersedes whatever divides us,” he said.

Senator Shettima also called on Nigerians to continue praying for peace and stability across the country, noting that ongoing tensions in different parts of the world, especially in the Middle East, should further strengthen the country’s commitment to unity and peaceful coexistence.

“Let there be peace in the land. Let us continue to pray for peace not only in Borno State but in every nook and cranny of Nigeria,” he added.

The Eid prayers were attended by the Deputy Governor of Borno State, Umar Usman Kadafur; the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari; members of the National Assembly and other senior government officials.

Shortly after the prayers, the Deputy Governor paid a traditional Sallah homage to the Vice President at his Maiduguri residence, where he commended Shettima for his continued support to the government and people of Borno State.

Kadafur prayed for good health, wisdom and strength for the Vice President as he continues to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in advancing the country’s development agenda.

He also urged Nigerians to continue praying for lasting peace, unity and prosperity across the country.
