Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, is expected to resign from office in the coming days following a high-level meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the minister’s Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Tunji Bolaji, after a closed-door meeting held between both men.
According to the statement, Adelabu met with President Tinubu on Tuesday where he presented a comprehensive report on his stewardship of the power sector over the past two and a half years. The presentation included key reforms and policy frameworks aimed at improving electricity generation, transmission, and overall sector efficiency.
A major highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and its Strategic Implementation Plan, which the minister described as a long-term roadmap for improving Nigeria’s electricity supply, expanding access, and strengthening energy security.
Following the engagement, President Tinubu reportedly commended the minister for his service and granted him approval to pursue his political ambition in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 elections. His planned resignation is expected to formalize his exit from the Federal Executive Council.
The statement added that Adelabu’s decision aligns with ongoing administrative transitions within the cabinet, especially as political appointees with electoral ambitions are expected to step aside in line with electoral guidelines.
Adelabu, who was appointed Minister of Power in August 2023, is expected to formally step down in the coming days as preparations intensify for his governorship ambition in Oyo State.
