A Federal High Court sitting in Katsina State has sentenced a woman to death by hanging after finding her guilty of offences related to terrorism and illegal arms trafficking.
The convict, identified as Hauwa’u Mukhtar, was prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS) on charges bordering on conspiracy to commit terrorism and aiding terrorist activities.
According to court proceedings, Mukhtar was arrested on September 16, 2023, at the Jibia Motor Park while allegedly attempting to transport 438 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition to a suspected armed group leader operating in the Dunburum Forest area of Zamfara State.
The prosecution told the court that the defendant acted as part of a supply network facilitating the movement of weapons to criminal groups operating in parts of northwestern Nigeria.
Delivering judgment, the presiding judge, Justice A. B. Bawale, held that the prosecution had successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt through witness testimonies and material evidence presented during trial.
The court subsequently sentenced Mukhtar to death in accordance with provisions of the Katsina State Penal Code Law, 2021.
The ruling adds to a series of recent terrorism-related convictions secured by security agencies in Nigeria, as authorities intensify efforts to dismantle armed networks and cut off illegal arms supply chains across the country. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
