The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has called for stronger oversight and transparency in Nigeria’s security spending, following the Senate’s rejection of a motion seeking to investigate military expenditure.
Adebayo criticised the decision, arguing that Nigerians deserve clearer accountability in how defence fund running into trillions of naira are managed, especially amid persistent insecurity in several parts of the country.
The Senate had declined proposals for a full-scale investigation into military spending during its recent session, with lawmakers instead focusing on resolutions urging security agencies to intensify efforts against banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping, as well as to strengthen ongoing security interventions.
Reacting to the development, Adebayo maintained that parliamentary oversight of public funds is essential for effective governance and improved security outcomes. He stressed that without transparency, public confidence in security spending would continue to decline.
The debate adds to growing national conversations on accountability, defence budgeting, and strategies to address Nigeria’s worsening security challenges. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
